Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Member of Parliament from Hyderabad, has taken legal action by moving the Supreme Court to seek a stay on the implementation of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

Joining several other petitioners who have approached the apex court, including the Indian Union Muslim League and Solidarity Youth Movement, Owaisi’s move comes in response to the Union government’s notification of the rules associated with the CAA.

In his application, Owaisi has requested that no applications seeking citizenship status be entertained under the Act until the main petition is resolved. He also emphasised that recourse should not be permitted under the proviso to Section 2(1)(b) of the Act.

Owaisi had previously filed a petition before the Supreme Court in 2019, asserting that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act fails to meet the standards set by Article 14 of the Constitution.

The recent action follows the Union government’s notification of the Citizenship Amendment Rules on March 11, aiming to enforce the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, which remains a subject of numerous ongoing legal challenges.
